What if your church showed up in your neighborhood?

What would happen if several hundred people from Seneca Creek showed up in your neighborhood? Or in the parking lot of your workplace? Or in the cafeteria of your school? And what if we all showed up with our work clothes on, ready to jump in and help? What would you want us to do? Clean up the local park? Paint the home of a single mom? Fill the pantry of an out-of-work family? Feed the homeless guy that stands at the corner?

That’s the question behind Ignite Week (Oct. 16-22). Where can we serve in order to meet a need in our city? And the answer lies in each of us. Maybe you know exactly how you’d answer. If so, be sure to email us (info@senecacreek.org) with your idea, so we can try to make sure it happens during Ignite Week. Then again, maybe you don’t know what you’d want us to do. If that’s your situation, would you please take one minute each day, and ask God to open your eyes to a need that he’d like you to help meet? Then, email us (info@senecacreek.org) to let us know about the project.

Together, we’re attempting to involve 1,000 people during Ignite Week. So far we have about 34 projects. It would be great to get another 46 for a total of 80! Together, we can make it happen. Together we can share the goodness of God, and ignite HOPE the week of October 16-22.

And if you’d like to serve in one of the many projects we already have scheduled, be sure to sign up online .

For more info about WHY we’re doing it this way this year (instead of Ignite Sunday), please see my letter from last week. And then join us Sunday as we continue our series, “Road Signs: Where Is God Leading You?”

Lecrae searches for significance

Here’s a powerful story from Lecrae. You may also want to check out I AM SECOND. Add your comments below.

Too busy to make a difference? Really?

Okay, I have to start with this. Last Sunday was an explosion of hope! If you were with us you got hope splashed all over you as we watched story after story of people’s lives being changed by God. Like this one…

You also heard us talk about Ignite Week: 1,000 people from Seneca Creek serving during one week. And many of you (163 to be specific) responded. BUT…if you haven’t signed up yet, please read on.

Let’s face it, we’re busy people. Commuting, kids, deadlines, and commitments have us running like crazy. Taking time to serve during Ignite Week (Oct. 16-22) sounds wonderful…and not very realistic. I hear you. Let me offer a solution. Consider how much time you might spend each week watching your favorite sports team, or drama, or streaming movies. Consider how much time you spend on your iPad, Facebook, YouTube, or your fantasy football team. Consider how much time you spend dining out, or enjoying your favorite hobby. Then ask yourself this: for one week, could I take 2 or 3 hours of THAT time, and invest it in igniting hope? I suspect that we could ALL do that. We could say, “I’ll make time for this because it’s important. I’ll make time to spread the goodness of God in our city. I’ll make time to take what I believe, and actually put it into action.”

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. – 1 John 3:18

Are we busy? Certainly. Are we too busy to make a difference during Ignite Week? I certainly hope not! Please take a few minutes today to review the current opportunities, then sign up for Ignite Week. And then take the initiative to invite your neighbor, co-worker, friend, or family member to join you in serving during Montgomery County’s 25th week of serving.

Finally, if you know of a need (maybe a neighbor struggling with cancer, a family who can’t afford groceries, an organization attempting to meet the desperate needs around us, etc.) then PLEASE contact info@senecacreek.org and help lead a small group of people to ignite HOPE in that way during Ignite Week. That may be exactly why God brought it to your attention in the first place.

I invite you to join us this Sunday as we kick off a new series, “Road Signs: Where Is God Leading You?” See you there!

P.S. We’ll have a brief “family meeting” at the conclusion of Sunday’s morning gatherings for everyone who considers Seneca Creek their “church family.”

How 1 plus 1 can equal 1,000

Did you know that Montgomery County has been running an annual “Community Service Week” for the last 25 years? Here’s my embarrassing confession: I’ve lived in this county for 22 of those 25 years, and I only found out about it a few months ago.

You may be wondering why I thought this was worth writing about. Here’s why. The week of serving happens to coincide with our annual “Ignite Sunday,” when we serve our community because God served us! And this year we’ve decided to expand Ignite Sunday to an entire week. It will be Ignite Week. What’s more, since it’s the 25th year for the county’s program, they’re shooting for 25,000 people to volunteer and serve during the week of October 16 to 22.

In the last couple years we’ve had almost 500 people serve at Ignite Sunday. And that’s during a small, two hour window on Sunday morning. So I believe that since we have an entire week, we can double that. Our goal is to get 1,000 people volunteering to serve in the community during that week. You read that right. One church, one week, 1,000 people. 1 + 1 = 1,000. “But Mark, that’s bigger than our Sunday services combined!” I know that. But you know all those friends you’d like to invite to Seneca Creek, but they’re just not “into church?” Well, here’s your chance. Invite them to serve with you!

Why are we doing this? Because God calls us to serve in the name of Christ. And because when we do, not only do we ignite HOPE, but we experience God’s work in our own lives! We need to do this as much as the community needs people to serve.

We’re obviously going to need everyone’s help on this, including your ideas on where and how we can serve during that week. We’ll be talking more about it in the coming weeks, but start praying and looking for opportunities now. Opportunities to serve. Opportunities to invite. Opportunities to ignite HOPE! It’s gonna’ be a great week!

Footnote: I met with a group of county officials yesterday as they were planning this event. When I told them about our goal, they were ecstatic! They’re hoping that we can inspire other churches to get involved in serving this community as well. Let’s all work together and raise the bar for followers of Christ throughout the county!

Oh, and don’t miss the exciting Baptism Celebration this Sunday during both services! Come early, as seating will be near capacity. See you then.

What do you remember about 9/11?

In just three days our country will remember the unforgettable tragedy of 9/11. It is forever burned into our minds. What do you remember about that day?

  • I remember standing in a crowded church office at our Ministry Center on Wisteria Drive, watching a little blurry TV image of the towers coming down.
  • I remember the fear that was heavy in the air.
  • I remember struggling to understand our world in the days that followed.
  • I remember wondering what kind of world my little girls would grow up in.
  • I remember standing on the corner of our neighborhood with strangers-who-suddenly-became-friends holding candles and cheering as cars drove by with flags flying.
  • I remember gathering to pray for our nation, our leaders, and the families of those who lost their lives on that day.
  • I remember LOTS of people coming to church the next Sunday, searching for hope.

I’d appreciate knowing what you remember most. It will help me prepare for this Sunday’s message. Please share your memories in the reply/comment box below.
Never forget…HOPE!

Voicing your opinions

In the last three weeks we’ve had three different, dynamic people speak on Sunday mornings: Harold Hall, Mark Stephens, and Dr. Wayne Evans.  Three powerful messages from three different voices.  (Click here to listen to any of these messages you may have missed.)  Now, I’d like you to add YOUR voice.  Specifically, I’d like your ideas for future guest speakers.

Who would you like to hear from in the coming year as we consider our teaching line-up?  Whose voice would help you in your journey of following Christ?  Maybe it’s someone we’ve just recently heard from.  Maybe it’s someone we’ve NEVER heard from.  This is your chance to make your voice heard!  You can hit reply to the email, or you can add your comments (anonymously) in the comment box below.

Many of you have been spending the month of August in the book of Proverbs with us, reading one chapter each day.  You may want to check out the comments of some of your fellow Seneca Creek family at this site. I know I’ve had some great insights through this powerful book.  For example, Proverbs 19:11.  (You’ll have to look it up!)  And this Sunday we’ll wrap up our teaching series from Proverbs with a message called, “One Simple Step to Becoming Wise.”  I hope can join us then.
Finally, thanks to the 100 or so people who came out last Friday night for “Pursue: Worship Night.”  It was a rich, powerful time of worshipping together as a church.  There’s more to come in the next year.

When life starts to shake, rattle and roll

We’re all breathing a sigh of relief after this week’s earthquake.  It rattled our fears as much as it did the crust of the earth.  And you probably did what most of us did here at the office, which was to stand around stunned until it was over.  But one person knew what to do. That person was Dave Hawley, our Creative Arts pastor.

Dave grew up in California…land of earthquakes.  Every kid there learns early in life to either run outside if you can get there in seconds, or else stand in a doorframe (it’s the strongest part of the house).  Which is where Dave went when the earth started to shake, rattle and roll this week.  He knew exactly what to do when things started getting crazy all around.
Here’s my point.  Earthquakes might be rare around here, but earthquakes that shake, rattle and roll your life around are all too common.  We experience earthquakes in our finances, our health, our marriages, and our careers.  And when they strike (often with little or no warning), we stand around stunned…unsure of what to do.  We don’t know where the strongest place is.  But it doesn’t have to be that way.
If you’ve been reading along with us in the book of Proverbs this month, you would have read the following in Proverbs 18:10:
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
The name of the Lord is his character, his reputation, his very nature.  And if you know God well, you know that he’s the one to run to when the earthquake rolls into your life.  The writer of Proverbs is saying, “This is what wisdom looks like; when trouble hits, you run to God.”  Why?  Because you’ve learned from an early age that this is how to react to earthquakes.
What was the last earthquake to shake, rattle and roll your personal life?  How did you respond?  If it happened again, would you stand there paralyzed?  Or would you run to a strong tower?  Maybe this is a good time to practice

How do you use your super powers?

I used to think it would cool to be one of the Fantastic Four (from the comic books…long before the movie).  They could do almost anything with their incredible power!  To be more specific, I wanted to be Mr. Fantastic, with all those stretching powers.  What about you?  What super powers would YOU like to have?  Do you know what the most desired super powers are?

A recent survey revealed a tie for first place.  The most desired super powers were: Traveling through time, and reading minds.  (Sorry, Mr. Fantastic.)  In next week’s post I’ll give you step by step instructions on how to accomplish both of those!  Or…maybe I won’t. You’ll have to wait and see.
Turns out, though, you won’t have to wait until next week to discover your super power.  You already have it.  Surprised?  Maybe you’ve been reading along with us this month in the book of Proverbs.  (See this site for the thoughts and insights of many of your fellow Seneca Creek family.)  We’ve encouraged everyone to read one chapter a day, since there are 31 chapters, and 31 days in August. It’s a great way to get wisdom.  And if you read chapter 10 yesterday, you’d have seen things like:
  • The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life
  • Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning
  • The mouth of a fool invites ruin
  • Whoever spreads slander is a fool
  • He who holds his tongue is wise
  • The tongue of the righteous is choice silver
  • The lips of the righteous nourish many
  • The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom
What’s the super power here?  You don’t have to be a Bible scholar to figure this one out.  You could probably do it without your first cup of coffee!  The super power that you and I have is right under our noses.  Literally.  With our mouth we can accomplish wonderful, powerful things.  We can restore life, hope, and wealth.  Or, we can bring ruin, devastation, and poverty.  If that’s not a super power, I’m not sure what is.
So the question is simple.  How do you use your super power?  I know I’m rethinking how I use mine after reading Proverbs 10!
-Pastor Mark

P.S. Would you have picked one of the two super powers that tied for first?  Feel free to list your favorite super power in the comment box below.

What I SHOULD have said last Sunday

For those of you who were with us last Sunday, we looked at another of Jesus’ hard sayings in John 6:53-54.  I told the true story about a homeless man whose song brought a production company to tears.  And though I told you the lyrics to the song, I didn’t share the song.  That was a mistake.  I should have played it for you, because…it’s a powerful and moving declaration of the message Jesus intended in his remarks in John 6.  See for yourself (be sure to listen past the first 20 seconds).
In reading the comments of others who’ve listened to this, the song is legendary.  And as one Seneca Creek person told me afterwards, “I pulled up Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet on YouTube.  It was great.  Can’t get the tune out of my head.  I am holding you responsible.”  And now you know why.

If you missed last Sunday, you can listen online or subscribe to our free podcast on iTunes.
Finally, I encourage you to join us in getting wisdom this month as we read the book of Proverbs together.  And you can join in the conversation here if you’d like.  This goes hand-in-hand with our new series, “Got Wisdom,” that starts this Sunday.  See you then!
